Now that you’ve become so familiar with the BIG CHORDS in pop music (the I, V, vi, IV chord progression), you might start to hear it everywhere. That’s because it’s one of the most popular chord progressions ever, found in anything from classical to synthpop.  ‘Let It Be’ by the Beatles, ‘I’m Yours’ by Jason Mraz, ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey…this ever-growing list goes on and on!

So why not add a few songs yourself to this list?  I hope that these chords have inspired you to create your own musical compositions, whether you use these chords to accompany a new vocal melody or create some instrumental music from these chords.

You can use the exercise in this video to get inspired, or you can create your own exercises out of these chords.  If you’re looking for more advice on creating your own music, arranging your favorite songs for the piano, and other practice tips, we’ve got plenty more to teach you in the pianote foundations lesson series!

Lisa Witt has been teaching piano for more than 20 years and in that time has helped hundreds of students learn to play the songs they love.
