Pay attention to hand position changes and remember, there\u2019s no shame in writing fingering down!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, practice hands separate before putting your hands together. Playing hands together will be much easier if your brain has already learned the fingering on each hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"notice-the-chords\" style=\"font-size:28px\">Notice the chords<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the sheet music feels overwhelming to you but you\u2019re familiar with chords, see if you can identify the chords the music is built on. Remember: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/chords-the-foundations-of-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">everything is built on chords<\/a>! Seeing the chords in your sheet music can be a shortcut to reading it faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<span class=\"blue-text-block\">\ud83c\udfb9 <b><i>WHAT IS RAGTIME?<\/i><\/b>  According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/ihas.200035811\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Library of Congress<\/a>, ragtime is: <i>A genre of musical composition for the piano, generally in duple meter and containing a highly syncopated treble lead over a rhythmically steady bass. A ragtime composition is usually composed three or four contrasting sections or strains, each one being 16 or 32 measures in length.<\/i><\/span>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"go-slow-and-look-ahead\" style=\"font-size:28px\">Go slow and look ahead<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Always start a new piece slowly. (The original score even has \u201cnot fast\u201d as the tempo marking!) Another tip is to look ahead at what\u2019s coming up in the next measure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"spend-extra-time-on-the-tricky-bits\" style=\"font-size:28px\">Spend extra time on the tricky bits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easy to fall into the habit of playing the fun, easy bits over and over. But you won\u2019t progress that way. It\u2019s harder work, but find the trickiest bits and practice <em>those <\/em>parts over and over. Your hard work will not go unrewarded!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"have-fun\" style=\"font-size:28px\">Have fun!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep the vibes light and happy. Maybe reward yourself with some ice cream after practicing &#8220;The Entertainer.&#8221;\ud83c\udf66<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"about-scott-joplin\" style=\"font-size:32px\"><strong>About Scott Joplin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The man behind the ice cream truck song was actually a very serious (and talented) composer named Scott Joplin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott Joplin is nicknamed the King of Ragtime\u2014ragtime being a piano-focused genre that is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzinamerica.org\/lessonplan\/5\/1\/250\">direct ancestor of jazz<\/a>. Joplin is probably the most famous ragtime composer of all time, but he wanted to be seen as a serious composer, which was challenging because he was born not too long after the Civil War. Joplin\u2019s biggest musical achievement was probably <em>Treemonisha<\/em>, an opera about the importance of education and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/ihas.200035812\/\">struggles of Black Americans<\/a> as they try to gain a foothold in mainstream American society.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/c\/ca\/Scott_Joplin_19072.jpg\" alt=\"Composer of the entertainer, Scott Joplin. Black and white photo of a man in necktie and suit.\" width=\"264\" height=\"343\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, Scott Joplin never saw a full performance of his opera and <em>Treemonisha <\/em>would not officially d\u00e9but until the 1970s. Joplin died poor and was buried in an unmarked grave.
