We Asked 1000+ Pianists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cHow long does it take to learn piano?\u201d is a question our team hears a lot as music educators. The correct answer is &#8220;it depends&#8221;\u2014after all, progress depends on previous experience, learning method, practice habits, and other factors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I wasn&#8217;t satisfied with &#8220;it depends.&#8221; So, I asked piano players this very question. I wanted to know how long it takes\u2014and <em>what <\/em>it takes\u2014to get to the level they are at now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I surveyed more than 1000 piano players. Knowing this, if I was starting piano today, I would budget around 5 years to reach an intermediate level of piano.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background is-style-dots\" style=\"background-color:#f61a30;color:#f61a30\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#f61a30;font-size:24px\"><em>More than half of intermediate pianists learned as adults.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>That&#8217;s proof it&#8217;s never too late to learn! 82% of novice players, 56% of intermediate players, and 27% of advanced and expert piano players learned primarily as adults.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background is-style-dots\" style=\"background-color:#f61a30;color:#f61a30\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#f61a30;font-size:24px\"><em>Frequent + short sessions are key.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Most advanced and expert pianists practice every day (53%) or five to six times a week (24%). But most of them only practice 45-90 minutes per session (36%) or 15-45 minutes per session (29%).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background is-style-dots\" style=\"background-color:#f61a30;color:#f61a30\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#f61a30;font-size:24px\"><em>Lots of people are teaching themselves.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>57% of beginners, 48% of novices, and 35% of intermediate pianists self-teach using books and online resources. (Please answer the rest of this survey with this style in mind.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did most of your piano learning happen when you were a child or an adult?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which ability level do you most identify with?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How did you learn how to play piano?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How many years have you consistently played piano?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When your piano ability was highest, how often did you practice, on average?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you were practicing this many times a week, how long was each practice session?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Did you play another instrument or style of piano before this?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which area of practice do you think has helped you improve the most?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey is now closed, but you can still read all the questions and answer choices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/piano-ability-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ability-levels\" style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>Ability Levels<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how we defined ability levels in our survey:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Beginner: <\/strong>You\u2019re learning the very basics of piano.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Novice: <\/strong>You can play simple songs. You\u2019re starting to feel comfortable and to have fun.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Intermediate: <\/strong>You play well enough that other people see you as someone who knows what they\u2019re doing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Advanced: <\/strong>You\u2019ve been playing for several years. You may perform casually, and your audience finds your skills impressive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expert:<\/strong> Music is your calling. You wow listeners with your skills and you may be earning money through performing, teaching, composing, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>1159 people responded to our survey. (You can skip to findings about them <a href=\"#advanced-expert-piano-players\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will also focus on intermediate players (read about them <a href=\"#intermediate-piano-players\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"intermediate-piano-players\">here<\/a>). Some things to keep in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Self-reported data. <\/strong>Because there was no test, respondents self-identified with the ability they felt most aligned with and answered questions based on how they interpreted them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skew towards less advanced players. <\/strong>Most data was from novice and intermediate players. You may also be able to play iconic piano hits like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/river-flows-in-you-piano-tutorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cRiver Flows In You\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/fur-elise-piano-sheet-music-tutorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cF\u00fcr Elise.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a great stage to be in, one where a lot of piano repertoire becomes accessible. And it\u2019s a very attainable goal, even for adult learners! Keep in mind that many of these musicians have been playing for a long time\u201420+ years in some cases!  So, the majority of their learning may have happened when online tutorials and resources aimed at adults were scarce. Most have been playing piano for a decade or more. They practice most days of the week, but few practice more than three hours at once. Classical pianists recorded slightly longer practice sessions, while pop\/rock pianists were more likely to have played another style of piano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"box-snippet\">\n<div class=\"shadow\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div><i class=\"fas icon fa-piano\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-container\">\n<b>Speedy Learners:<\/b> If we look at intermediate and advanced pianists who have been playing for less than three years, the same pattern of frequent practice, short sessions occurs. 61% of these speedy learners practice every day or five to six times a week. But 45% of them practiced just 15-45 minutes a day.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>An overwhelming majority (70%) of expert pianists have been playing for 20+ years. So, it can take a very, very long time to become a high-level piano player. However, do note that our survey doesn&#8217;t take age into consideration, so some of these players may just be older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing that top piano players have been playing for decades may feel intimidating. It&#8217;s also interesting to see that many novices are adult learners. So, if you&#8217;re starting piano at a later stage in life, you are far from alone! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Practice frequency varies among novices, who may still be figuring out their rhythm. The vast majority of novices practice between 15 and 45 minutes a session. They practice most days out of the week, but there&#8217;s a wider range between those who practice a handful of times and those who practice every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-x-large-font-size\" id=\"conclusion\" style=\"color:#f61a30\"><strong>CONCLUSION<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How long does it take to learn piano?
