For much of the band\u2019s history, that keyboardist has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/how-to-play-scales-fast\/\">Jordan Rudess<\/a>\u2014a Juilliard-educated pianist who has been voted \u201cBest Keyboardist of All Time\u201d by Music Radar Magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This post is a treat because we have <em>Jordan Rudess himself<\/em> breaking down the keyboard parts! The Phrygian scale starts on a minor 2nd, creating a dark and mysterious sound. It\u2019s all highly recommended.<\/p>\n<cite>Jordan Rudess<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-ragtime-section\" style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>The Ragtime Section<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the neatest things about this song is the cheeky ragtime section. (Octaves are pretty common in ragtime).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<video playsinline=\u201c\u201d autoplay=\u201c\u201d src=\"https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2024\/Dance%20of%20Eternity\/jordan%20rudess%20octaves.mp4\" loop=\"\" muted=\"\" width=\"100%\"><\/video>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-piano-guitar-solo\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><strong>The Piano\/Guitar Solo<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is perhaps the most technically challenging part of a technically challenging song! For Jordan, headspace is really important when you\u2019re performing a song like this, especially if you play in a stadium with thousands of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan establishes his fingering first. Then, he thinks about how he will breathe and stand during the performance. \u201cAll that is really, really important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<video playsinline=\u201c\u201d autoplay=\u201c\u201d src=\"https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2024\/Dance%20of%20Eternity\/DoE%20solo.mp4\" loop=\"\" muted=\"\" width=\"100%\"><\/video>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>You really want to practice not only just the finger motions of it but also you need to practice the headspace that you want to play it in.<\/p>\n<cite>Jordan Rudess<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-unison-and-thirds-section\" style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>The Unison and Thirds Section<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This section begins with a unison guitar and keyboard riff. The guitar and bass keep going in unison, but the keyboard starts introducing thirds and fourths\u2026which are not easy to play fast!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<video playsinline=\u201c\u201d autoplay=\u201c\u201d src=\"https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2024\/Dance%20of%20Eternity\/DoE%20thirds.mp4\" loop=\"\" muted=\"\" width=\"100%\"><\/video>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-weird-section\" style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>The \u201cWeird\u201d Section<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yep, Dream Theater calls this the \u201cweird\u201d section! When Jordan Rudess joined the band, he brought with him a wide range of influences. We counted 127!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This particular section near the end of the song has a lot. We go from 4\/4 to 3\/4 to 12\/16 to 10\/16\u2026and then to 5\/16 and 6\/16!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<video playsinline=\u201c\u201d autoplay=\u201c\u201d src=\"https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2024\/Dance%20of%20Eternity\/DoE%20Time%20Signatures.mp4\" loop=\"\" muted=\"\" width=\"100%\"><\/video>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-outro\" style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>The Outro<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The outro is refreshingly simple with a memorable theme. There are still time signature changes though, just to keep things interesting!
