{"id":2102,"date":"2020-10-20T08:58:15","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T15:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/?p=2102"},"modified":"2023-01-13T15:53:46","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T23:53:46","slug":"play-old-school-rock-n-roll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/play-old-school-rock-n-roll\/","title":{"rendered":"Play Old School Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Rock \u2019n\u2019 Roll piano burst into the music scene in the 1950s and \u201860s changing the landscape of music&#8211; and piano playing&#8211; forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time I remember hearing this kind of music, I was listening to a man called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fw7SBF-35Es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jerry Lee Lewis<\/a>&#8212; also known by his nickname: <i>The Killer<\/i>. He has been described as &#8220;Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll&#8217;s first great wild man\u201d, and is absolutely one of the most influential pianists of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of his act, he would pound the keys with his heel, kick the piano bench aside, sit on the keyboard, and even stand on top of the instrument. He was an incredible showman and musician&#8211; one of the first true pioneers of Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see in the video&#8211; Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll piano might be a bit crazy to play, but it\u2019s a great way to test your endurance on the keys, and have a lot of fun doing it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s dig our heels in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>The Progression<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping things simple, we\u2019ll use the<a href=\"\/blog\/chord-progressions-for-mood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1-4-5 progression<\/a> in the key of C (all the white keys).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><video src=\"https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2020\/Play%20Old%20School%20Rock%20n%20Roll\/rock-n-roll-piano-GIF1.mp4\" autoplay=\"autoplay\" loop=\"loop\" muted=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"150\"><\/video><br>That makes for:<br>C Major (1st Inv), F Major, and G Major\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musora.com\/musora-cdn\/image\/quality=85\/https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2020\/Play%20Old%20School%20Rock%20n%20Roll\/rock-n-roll-music%20shot.png\" alt=\"\"><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musora.com\/musora-cdn\/image\/quality=85\/https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2020\/Play%20Old%20School%20Rock%20n%20Roll\/rock-n-roll-music%20shot.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Download the sheet music here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/center>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>Right-Hand Technique<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For each measure, play your chords repeatedly in 8th notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#f61a30\">C Major: 2 measures<br>F Major: 2 measures<br>G Major: 1 measure<br>F Major: 1 measure<br>C Major: 1 measure<br>G Major: 1 measure<br>(Repeat)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start slow and work your way up to get to familiar with the progression. When you finish, try to end on the 1st C for a sense of resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>Left-Hand Rhythms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The left hand is a little less consistent, but still follows a pattern, and the same chord progression. We\u2019ll stick to triad shapes, all in the root pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><video src=\"https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2020\/Play%20Old%20School%20Rock%20n%20Roll\/rock-n-roll-piano-GIF2.mp4\" autoplay=\"autoplay\" loop=\"loop\" muted=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"150\"><\/video><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll play these triads in broken form, from bottom to top on each measure, using this rhythm:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#f61a30\" class=\"has-inline-color\">1<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;&amp; 2&nbsp;<strong><span style=\"color:#f61a30\" class=\"has-inline-color\">&amp;<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;3 &amp;&nbsp;<strong><span style=\"color:#f61a30\" class=\"has-inline-color\">4<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;&amp;<br><strong><span style=\"color:#f61a30\" class=\"has-inline-color\">1<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;&amp; 2&nbsp;<strong><span style=\"color:#f61a30\" class=\"has-inline-color\">&amp;<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;3 &amp;&nbsp;<strong><span style=\"color:#f61a30\" class=\"has-inline-color\">4<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;&amp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure to follow along in the video if you need to get a better sense of the timing. Head to 4:10 to check it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>Tips \u2018n\u2019 Tricks for Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure to stay relaxed when you\u2019re playing! The repetition of playing those quick chords with your right hand is going to get tiring&#8211; so start slowly and work your speed up, faster and faster every time you try, and when you feel ready\u2026 <i>start going <a href=\"\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/how-to-play-piano-faster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">really fast.<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What about one of Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll Piano\u2019s greatest moves? <i>The Slide<\/i> (also known as a glissando) is a fast run up or down several keys on the keyboard.
