At the end of the day, all you need are 15 minutes and three things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/how-to-practice-piano-scales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scales<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/the-best-way-to-practice-chords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chords<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/perfect-beginner-songs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Songs<\/a><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you spend as little as five minutes a day on each of these categories, you <em>will<\/em> get better!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"set-s-m-a-r-t-goals\" style=\"font-size:28px\">Set S.M.A.R.T goals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>S.M.A.R.T stands for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Specific:<\/strong> \u201cMy goal is to play <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/fur-elise-piano-sheet-music-tutorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018F\u00fcr Elise.\u2019<\/a>\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Measurable: <\/strong>\u201cMy goal is to play \u2018F\u00fcr Elise\u2019 at the correct tempo by slowly increasing my speed every day.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Achievable:<\/strong> \u201cI have played pieces slightly less difficult than \u2018F\u00fcr Elise.\u2019 So it\u2019s an achievable goal.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Relevant:<\/strong> \u201cMy mother\u2019s favorite piece is \u2018F\u00fcr Elise,\u2019 so I want to surprise her with it on Mother\u2019s Day.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Time-Bound:<\/strong> \u201cI will learn \u2018F\u00fcr Elise\u2019 at the correct tempo by Mother\u2019s Day!\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, when it comes to learning piano as an adult, it\u2019s important to be realistic. Can you start from scratch at age 50 and become a world-class concert pianist by age 75? Probably not. But can you learn to play beautiful music, improvise, compose original music, and perform some casual gigs at age 75? Absolutely!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"remember-your-why\" style=\"font-size:28px\">Remember your \u201cwhy\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be points in your musical journey where you\u2019ll feel frustrated, discouraged, uninspired, tired\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When this happens (notice I say \u201cwhen,\u201d not \u201cif\u201d because it WILL happen!), <strong>remember your why<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do you want to learn how to play piano? To surprise your partner with their favorite song? To play that Chopin piece you\u2019ve always loved? Children\u2019s brains are more plastic than adult ones, but adult brains never stop being plastic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can you help your brain stay agile? Common-sense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-is-brain-plasticity-2794886\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">healthy habits<\/a> help, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Getting enough sleep. <\/strong>Sleep is so important in helping your brain remember what you learn. Science even supports taking a nap after learning something new.<\/li><li><strong>Exercising regularly.<\/strong> It\u2019s actually good for your brain!<\/li><li><strong>Listening to your circadian rhythm.<\/strong> What time of day do you play best?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"exercises\" style=\"font-size:32px\"><strong>Learning Piano as an Adult: Piano Exercises for Adult Learners<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some piano exercises you can do right away even if you\u2019ve never touched a piano before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-five-finger-scale\" style=\"font-size:28px\">The Five-Finger Scale<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First, find middle C. It\u2019s the note in the middle of the piano to the bottom left of the two black keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musora.com\/musora-cdn\/image\/quality=85\/https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2022\/Learning%20Piano%20As%20an%20Adult\/adult%20piano%20-%20where%20is%20C%20copy.png\" alt=\"Learning piano as an adult. Then, align the rest of your fingers on the next four notes. C is bottom left of group of two black keys.\" width=\"600\" height=\"290\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now try this with your left hand, starting on your pinky and ending on your thumb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chord-shapes\" style=\"font-size:28px\">Chord Shapes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Go back to your five-finger scale position on your right hand. Play C and G together\u2014that\u2019s fingers 1 and 5. This is called a shell chord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With your left hand, move through the following notes: C-G-A-F. And play your right hand shell chord four times on those four beats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rocking-the-notes\" style=\"font-size:28px\">Rocking the Notes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, with your hands in the same positions, break up the C and G in your right hand. At 28, he picked up the piano again and has since released seven albums.
