This is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/slash-chords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slash chord<\/a>, which means we play a normal B Major chord on our right hand and the note after the slash (G#) on our left hand.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musora.com\/musora-cdn\/image\/quality=85\/https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2021\/Falling%20-%20Redo\/Falling%20-%20B%3AG%23%20Chord%20-%20bigger.png\" alt=\"Keyboard diagram for B\/G# Major chord with G# and B-D#-F# keys highlighted and labelled.\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:28px\">The 1-5-6-4 Progression<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you know chord theory, you may have picked up on something interesting: &#8220;Falling&#8221; uses a version of the classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/pop-piano-chord-progressions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1-5-6-4 progression<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This progression is found in pop songs all over the place. What 1-5-6-4 means is we use chords built on the first, fifth, sixth, and fourth notes of the E Major scale. If you&#8217;re unfamiliar with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/the-number-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Number System<\/a>, that&#8217;s another handy chording thing you may want to check out after this tutorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Falling&#8221; doesn&#8217;t follow the 1-5-6-4 progression to an exact tee, but we use the same chords, just in a different order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:32px\"><strong>&#8220;Falling&#8221; Piano Intro Riff<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The riff that makes this song so iconic only contains three notes: G#, F#, and E.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find the rhythm challenging, I find that it helps to play along with the recording.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musora.com\/musora-cdn\/image\/quality=85\/https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2020\/Falling\/Intro-riff.png\" alt=\"Piano intro to &quot;Falling&quot; by Harry Styles - sheet music.\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Play the root note of each chord (E &gt; C# &gt; B &gt; G# &gt; A) with your left hand while you play the riff. You can play single notes in the bass, but to give it some extra emotional oomph, try octaves if you can reach them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the verse and chorus, just play simple chords with the melody. Singers who want to sound close to the original recording can play simple chords as they sing \u2014 this will work best. If you don&#8217;t want to sing, play the lead sheet melody with your right hand and chords to accompany it on your left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve gotten comfortable with the song, experiment with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/piano-chord-inversions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inversions<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lucky for you, the chord progression doesn&#8217;t change throughout the intro, verse, and chorus. (Not easy!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experiment with chord inversions, add in your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/riffs-and-fills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">riffs and fills<\/a>, and really make this song your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you want to keep it sparse and simple, that&#8217;s totally okay too. That&#8217;s the way Harry does it, after all.
