His father was a pianist and his parents put him in classical music lessons at age four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his interviews, Joel recalls that his piano teacher was also a ballet teacher. As a result, he was a victim of teasing when neighborhood boys saw him going to his teacher&#8217;s house. Eventually, the bullying made him take up boxing lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Joel was 14, he fell in love with the music of the <a href=\"https:\/\/grammymuseum.org\/museum-at-home\/revisit-the-british-invasion-how-1960s-beat-groups-conquered-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British Invasion<\/a> and with soul music. In 2001, Joel partnered with concert pianist Hyung-ki Joo to release <em>Fantasies &amp; Delusions: Music for Solo Piano<\/em>, a classical album completely dedicated to the piano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you listen to the album, Joel&#8217;s classical influences are clear as day. Track titles include &#8220;Reverie (Villa D&#8217;Este)&#8221; and &#8220;Air (Dublinesque)&#8221; and there are turns of phrase that are not-so-subtle nods at Beethoven and Chopin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some have called this album <a href=\"http:\/\/forum.pianoworld.com\/ubbthreads.php\/topics\/1228297\/Re:_Billy_Joel_Fantasies_and_D.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">derivative<\/a> of the classical greats, Joel sees this critique as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=1134590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compliment<\/a>. He can imitate accents\u2014his own New Yorker twang is instantly recognizable\u2014and he seamlessly integrates the piano into his speeches. Because of that I knew I was going to beat myself for not being better. So I stopped. That&#8217;s it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joel seems to value quality over quantity.
