Historians aren\u2019t certain, but there are three main contenders: Therese Malfatti, Elizabeth R\u00f6ckel, and Juliane Katherine Elisabet \u201cElise\u201d Barensfeld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:70%\">\n<p><strong>Therese Malfatti <\/strong>is the most likely suspect because the original manuscript was discovered in her personal belongings. There\u2019s even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/composers\/beethoven\/guides\/therese-malfatti-1792-1851-and-beethovens-fur-elis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">story<\/a> that Beethoven meant to write \u201cf\u00fcr Therese\u201d on the manuscript but was too drunk and his handwriting got interpreted as \u201cf\u00fcr Elise\u201d instead. The time of the composition is also around the time Beethoven may have proposed to Therese (only to be denied her hand in marriage).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:30%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/6\/6c\/Therese_Malfatti_Anonymus.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Therese Malfatti<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tonara.com\/blog\/history-of-fur-elise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Other possible Elises<\/a> are <strong>Elizabeth R\u00f6ckel<\/strong>\u2014a soprano in Beethoven\u2019s opera who also refused to marry him\u2014and <strong>Elise Barensfield<\/strong>, a piano student of Therese Malfatti\u2019s. The A section is when you hear the iconic, two-note theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll walk you through all the notes in the video, but don&#8217;t get overwhelmed by the fingering! You don&#8217;t have to finger notes <em>exactly<\/em> the way I do, and you&#8217;ll see that I sometimes switch fingerings around. Just use a fingering that you&#8217;re comfortable with!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musora.com\/musora-cdn\/image\/quality=85\/https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2022\/Fur%20Elise\/fur%20elise%201.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What takes this piece from good to great are the dynamics and expression you choose to play it with. Get dramatic! Be flirtatious! (After all, this may have been a love letter of Beethoven&#8217;s!) Some words to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rubato:<\/strong> push-and-pull in the tempo that adds expression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poco moto: <\/strong>&#8220;with little movement&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diminuendo:<\/strong> gradually get softer; decrease in volume<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cF\u00fcr Elise\u201d wasn\u2019t published until 1867, 40 years after Beethoven\u2019s death. The mood also changes. We move into a &#8220;major&#8221; sound and things feel lighter and sweeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suggest practicing the left hand first because the left hand serves as a sort of &#8220;foundation&#8221; to build your right hand on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musora.com\/musora-cdn\/image\/quality=85\/https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2022\/Fur%20Elise\/fur%20elise%202.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Important! Just because things get a little faster here doesn&#8217;t mean it has to be louder! It can be tempting to play loud and fast, but remember: this section is intended to be sweet and delicate. Save room (and energy!) for the song to grow louder and more dramatic later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some different note values here, including some fast 32nd notes. Use your left hand (which you should learn first!) to align the notes of your right hand. Don&#8217;t rush those 32nd notes\u2014it&#8217;s tempting, but it&#8217;s important to stay steady and accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"font-size:30px\">\n<p>\u201cF\u00fcr Elise\u201d is also known as Bagatelle No. 25 in A Minor, WoO 59. We change moods <em>very<\/em> dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some <em>big<\/em> cranky chords here&#8230;which can be intimidating to read. But tease them apart, and you&#8217;ll find that they&#8217;re simply variations on familiar chord shapes. For example, snowman-shaped chords are just regular triads in root position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musora.com\/musora-cdn\/image\/quality=85\/https:\/\/pianote.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/blog\/2022\/Fur%20Elise\/fur%20elise%203-corrected.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On your left hand, you&#8217;ll play some repeated notes and chords\u2014the source of all the drama! And instead of playing all those repeated single notes with the same finger, you&#8217;ll notice that I switch between fingers 2 and 3. I think this helps me vary the feeling between the notes so they sound less monotonous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next bit is <em>very<\/em> beautiful and impressive. His interpretation of the B section is a little faster and livelier than mine or Victoria&#8217;s performance. He believes the piece should &#8220;fire your imagination.&#8221; After all, we don&#8217;t know how Beethoven intended the piece to be played, we only have a few markings.
