Some people think it\u2019s overplayed. But the truth is that Pachelbel\u2019s \u201cCanon\u201d is one of history\u2019s most impactful compositions. Ever. Why? The chord progression in \u201cCanon\u201d is one of the most widely used chord progressions in all of Western music. You can find it (and close variations) in songs like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cBasketcase\u201d by Green Day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t Look Back in Anger\u201d by Oasis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cMemories\u201d by Maroon 5<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The State Anthem of the Soviet Union<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This progression is the <strong>I &#8211; V &#8211; vi &#8211; iii &#8211; IV &#8211; I &#8211; IV &#8211; V<\/strong>. This progression can be seen as a simplified version of the Pachelbel progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<span class=\"blue-text-block\">\ud83c\udfb9 <b><i>DID YOU KNOW?<\/i><\/b> A traditional string quartet consists of a first and second violin, a viola, and a cello.<\/span>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"canon-in-d-history\" style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>Canon in D: History<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We don&#8217;t actually know much about Johann Pachelbel or &#8220;Canon in D.&#8221; We think it&#8217;s written in 1680, but historians aren\u2019t sure. However, the famous progression behind the Canon predates Johann Pachelbel. Nevertheless, the Canon lay in relative obscurity until one recording catapulted it to fame in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/composers\/pachelbel\/music\/pachelbels-canon-d-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1970s<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<span class=\"blue-text-block\">\ud83c\udfb9 <b><i>DID YOU KNOW?<\/i><\/b> The full title of Pachelbel\u2019s \u201cCanon\u201d is actually \u201cCanon &amp; Gigue in D Major.\u201d The gigue is a section that follows the canon, but isn\u2019t often played. It\u2019s in the same key and has a more upbeat nature.
