It\u2019s incredibly popular in modern pop and rock music. It also has a long history stretching back thousands and thousands of years. Here are some more intriguing reasons why the pentatonic scale is so magical:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"most-humans-recognize-the-pentatonic-scale\" style=\"font-size:24px\">Most humans recognize the pentatonic scale<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not everything in music is universal. For example, the seven-note <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/diatonic-chords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diatonic scale<\/a> common in Western music doesn&#8217;t exist in other cultures. But practically every music-making culture in the world recognizes the pentatonic scale. It\u2019s been found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/pentatonic-scale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">everywhere<\/a>, from Asia and Africa to Europe and North America.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pentatonic scale seems embedded into our psyche as humans. You can see Bobby McFerrin demonstrate this phenomenon in the following video. He sings a scale with a missing note and the audience intuitively fills in the right note. They are the fourth and seventh degree of the scale. Together, these notes form a <strong>tritone<\/strong>, a particularly harsh-sounding interval. Apart, you\u2019ll also notice that F and B form semitones with their neighboring notes. These attributes make them more difficult to work with because these notes are more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musical-u.com\/learn\/five-notes-will-change-your-life-pentatonic-scales\/\">prone to dissonance<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you stick to pentatonic scale notes, you automatically omit these notes. This makes the scale very \u201csafe\u201d and versatile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"box-snippet\">\n<div class=\"shadow\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div><i class=\"fas icon fa-piano\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-container\">\n<b>FYI!<\/b> Just because the fourth and seventh scale degrees are considered more dissonant doesn\u2019t mean that you can\u2019t play them ever. In fact, they make for very good passing notes. The general rule of thumb is to simply not linger on weaker notes. So, don\u2019t emphasize those scale degrees, but absolutely use them if you want to!\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-pentatonic-scale-and-the-blues-scale-are-closely-related\" style=\"font-size:24px\">The pentatonic scale and the blues scale are closely related<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another reason you might like the sound of the pentatonic scale is because of its similarity to the blues scale. While the blues scale is less universal than the pentatonic one, it is widely used in popular music and will sound familiar and pleasant to most modern music lovers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what\u2019s the difference between the pentatonic and the blues scale? The standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianote.com\/blog\/blues-scale-piano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blues scale<\/a> is just a pentatonic scale with an added \u201cblue\u201d note. In the major pentatonic scale, the blue note is \u266d3. While this sounds perfectly fine, it can quickly get stale. If you want to challenge your creativity and come up with more interesting and unique pentatonic improvisations, here are some tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"double-up-on-notes-and-add-articulation\" style=\"font-size:24px\">Double up on notes and add articulation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re not limited to playing notes one after another! Simply doubling up your notes to play dyads or even triads can level up the sophistication of a solo. When you double up notes, thirds and sixths are perhaps the \u201csafest\u201d combinations to sound nice. But experiment with different note combinations from your pentatonic scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And don\u2019t forget to add interesting articulations to your notes. Try trilling two notes. Or, slide into a pentatonic note from a passing tone a semi-tone away. Experiment with dynamics and don\u2019t forget about using a variety of rhythms!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"make-room-for-silence\" style=\"font-size:24px\">Make room for silence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A good solo doesn\u2019t need to have as many notes as possible! You can take breaks. And in fact, rests between notes can be the difference between an elementary solo and a more sophisticated one.
